I sometimes would consider myself a history lover and familiar with some aspects of World War II. However, when I read the synopsis for Someday We Will Fly I was blown away. This books covers a Jewish family escaping Poland and going to Shanghai, China. I never knew that happened, so immediately I had to read it.

This book is a Young Adult Historical Fiction. I loved at the end of the book at the author had wrote where she got the idea and how she based her characters off of people that actually could have existed. She did research on the topic and made sure that her story was accurate.

The story starts out as Lillia watches her parents perform their last act in the circus. During this time shows were illegal, and if they were caught they would face punishment. Once they finish their performance there is a knock on the door and then it is broken open by German officers. Everyone scatters, Lillia's father grabs her and her little sister Naomi, they run straight home. In the mess of it all Lillia's mother is lost. Once the sun is up the next day Lillia's father tells her to stay home and look after Naomi for he is going to look for their mother. Lillia becomes anxious as food starts to run out and she is not sure what happened to her mother or her father. Finally, her father comes home and he makes the decision that they will have to take a ship to Shanghai without their mother.

Once the family makes it to Shanghai Lillia tries to fill the place her mother would have had. She does allow herself to make a friend with a Chinese boy at school named Wei. She feels it is her job to look out for her family by any means necessary. She quits school when her father and little sister becomes sick and gets a job as a dancer at a place called Magnifique.

This book is filled with love, loss, and death. What will keep you reading is Lillia and the changes she makes of herself throughout the book. You see a young teen girl, being forced to grow up fast. You want to see her be successful and a part of you can't help but root for her because she loves her family so much.

I recommend this book for teens and adults. If you love historical fiction this is a good book to sit back with.
